Mother’s Day in the United States along with many other countries is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. The modern history of Mother’s Day is an interesting journey that began as a call for peace and community service before evolving into the commercialized holiday we all know today.
While rooted in ancient traditions, the American holiday began in the mid-19th century through efforts to improve child health and foster reconciliation. Before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis established “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach childcare and later organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day in 1868 to united former enemies. Anna Jarvis, the official founder of “Mother’s Day” created the day following her mothers death. Her intent was to honor maternal sacrifices, holding the first official celebration in 1908. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day and quickly it began to be commercialized. Anna Jarvis later spent years fighting against the commercialization of the holiday, even trying to abolish it.
